The Rotarian's primary motto is "Service Above Self.” Members of the Rotary community work hard to create positive change at home and around the world, and we appreciate others who share similar values.  Our club provides awards and recognition through “Service Above Self” awards presented to education professionals and students who exemplify the Rotary motto.

TEACHER/STAFF SERVICE ABOVE SELF AWARD
Each year the Rotary Club of Waupaca receives nominations and selects a recipient for a “Service Above Self” award to recognize a teacher who has made a difference through their involvement in the community.  This would include service in a community organization, charity, service club or community project, which is above and beyond their duties as a teacher.

Those serving in a capacity such as guidance counselor, social worker, library media specialist, school psychologist, dean of students, etc., are considered as teachers for the purpose of this award and are eligible to be nominated.

All teachers have a positive influence on their students in the classroom, but for this award recognizes the fact that teachers also set a good example to their students by being actively involved in the community.  A $250 cash award is made to the teacher and a $250 donation is made to a charity or community project on behalf of the award recipient.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
The purpose of this Award is to recognize a graduating senior who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to volunteerism and community service, to publicize the community service activities of students to inspire others, and promote the benefits of volunteerism. The Waupaca High School student council manages the selection process and may recommend up to three candidates for the award. Recommendations include a narrative identifying the actions taken by the candidates and the beneficial impact on individuals and/or the community.

Award recipients receive a certificate, their name is engraved on a Community Service Award plaque displayed at the high school, and a $250 donation is made to a charitable organization selected by the student. The award winner is announced at the high school awards assembly and the Award is presented at the Annual Dinner of the Rotary Club of Waupaca.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SERVICE ABOVE SELF AWARD
The Middle School Service Above Self Award is presented monthly to a middle school student who exhibits character traits consistent with the Rotary “service above self” motto. The students are nominated by the teachers and staff at the Waupaca Middle School, and there is a recipient each month during the course of the school year. Rotary makes a $25.00 donation to the charity of the recipient’s choice, and they receive a certificate documenting the recognition.

The award recognizes middle school students who exemplify Rotary’s purpose, and encourages Rotary’s mission in our community with middle school students. The award also brings middle school families into Rotary meetings where they experience the impact we have in the community, and makes them aware of programs such as RYE. There have been several students who have received the Service Above Self Award who have gone on to becoming RYE students.

HIGH SCHOOL CITIZEN PROGRAM

Each month the Rotary Club of Waupaca recognizes a senior high school student for their accomplishments.   Students are nominated for the recognition program by their teachers, and are invited to attend a Rotary meeting where they share a brief summary of their school activities, interests and education or vocational plans after graduation.  Selection criteria include:

  • Senior status – Student is an active senior on track to graduate or LIVE program participant who has already graduated
  • Academics – Student is performing at his/her highest potential
  • Leadership – Student consistently demonstrates and exceeds expected district, building, and classroom behavior expectations
  • Social responsibility – Student is clearly visible and active in giving of their time and abilities to help those around them, whether it be within a specific department, in interactions with staff and students, during extracurricular events, and/or through their community service and volunteer efforts
